The Map of Your Life

The Twelve Houses

If the signs are the how and the planets are the what, the houses are the where. They divide the sky into twelve life arenas, showing exactly where a planet’s energy plays out, from the smallest daily moment to the largest lifelong theme.

Reading the wheel

The houses always run counter-clockwise from the left. The 1st house begins at the Ascendant (the eastern horizon at your birth), and each of the twelve 30° slices follows in order. The four cross-points are the chart’s angles: the Ascendant, the Descendant, the Midheaven (MC) at the top, and the Imum Coeli (IC) at the base.

Each slice here is tinted by the natural element of the sign that rules it, matching the colour key below.

Angular

Angular houses (1, 4, 7, 10) are the four corners of the chart. Planets here act with the most force and initiative.

Succedent

Succedent houses (2, 5, 8, 11) follow the angles. They stabilise, resource, and hold what the angular houses begin.

Cadent

Cadent houses (3, 6, 9, 12) close each quarter. They adapt, learn, and reflect, distributing energy outward.

All Twelve Houses

Each house rules a life arena on two timescales at once: the short-term, everyday version and the long-term, lifelong arc. Filter by a life theme, or read all twelve.

1

The First House: House of Self

“I Am” · Aries · Mars · Angular

Ruled by Mars and the natural home of Aries, the 1st House is your point of entry into the world. It governs your physical body, temperament, and the instinctive way you approach anything new. Its cusp, the Ascendant, is the mask you wear and the lens everyone first meets you through.

Short-term

The face you lead with today: your mood on waking, how you show up in a room, the impression you make in the first thirty seconds of meeting someone.

Long-term

The lifelong project of becoming yourself — your core identity, physical body, temperament, and the personal style that stays recognisably you across every season of life. The 1st house cusp is your Ascendant, the single most personal point in the chart.

2

The Second House: House of Value

“I Have” · Taurus · Venus · Succedent

The 2nd House rules everything you can call 'mine' — money, possessions, and the material security you build. On a deeper level it governs self-worth: the private sense of what you deserve and what you are willing to value in yourself and in others.

Short-term

Everyday money moves: what you earn and spend this week, the things you own and enjoy, small purchases, and the quiet sense of whether you feel secure right now.

Long-term

Your enduring relationship with security and self-worth — how you build income, accumulate assets, and decide what you truly value. Over a lifetime this house tracks financial stability and the belief that you are worth providing for.

The Third House: House of Communication

“I Think” · Gemini · Mercury · Cadent

The 3rd House is the busy switchboard of the mind. It rules communication in all its forms, early learning, and the day-to-day environment: siblings, neighbours, short trips, and the constant exchange of information that keeps your world connected.

Short-term

The daily churn of the mind: texts and emails, short trips and commutes, quick conversations, errands, and the way you gather and pass along information hour to hour.

Long-term

How you learn and think across a lifetime — your early education, the bond with siblings and neighbours, your writing and speaking voice, and the curiosity that keeps your mind growing.

The Fourth House: House of Home & Family

“I Nurture” · Cancer · Moon · Angular

The 4th House is the foundation the whole chart is built on. It rules your home, family, and ancestral roots, the private emotional base you return to, and the domestic life and cohabitation you build with the people you love. Its cusp is the Imum Coeli, the deepest and most personal point in the sky.

Short-term

The feel of home right now: your living space, who you come back to at night, family check-ins, and the private mood you only show behind closed doors.

Long-term

Your roots and emotional foundation — the family you came from and the home you build, cohabitation with a partner, real estate, and the inner sense of belonging that anchors everything else. The 4th house cusp is the base of the chart (the IC).

The Fifth House: House of Romance & Creativity

“I Create” · Leo · Sun · Succedent

The 5th House is where the heart plays. It rules romance, flirtation, and the initial spark of love, along with creativity, pleasure, children, and every form of joyful self-expression. This is the house of what attracts you and how you express affection before deeper commitments are made.

Short-term

The spark itself: flirtation, a new crush, a fun date, a creative burst, play, and the pleasures you chase purely because they light you up.

Long-term

The heart's creative output over time — courtship and love affairs, children, artistic gifts, and the ongoing expression of joy and self-delight. This is the house of the initial spark of love, before long-term commitments are made.

The Sixth House: House of Health & Service

“I Serve” · Virgo · Mercury · Cadent

The 6th House governs the daily systems that keep a life running: work, service, and the routines and habits that shape your health. It is the house of craft and improvement, where you refine your skills and tend to the body one ordinary day at a time.

Short-term

The texture of your day: your to-do list, work tasks, meals, exercise, the small habits that keep you running, and how well your body feels this morning.

Long-term

The systems that sustain a life — your working craft, long-term physical health, the daily discipline you refine over years, and the quiet dignity of being useful to others.

The Seventh House: House of Partnership

“I Partner” · Libra · Venus · Angular

The 7th House is the mirror of the self, sitting directly opposite the 1st. It rules marriage, committed partnerships, and binding one-to-one agreements, from soulmates to business partners. Its cusp, the Descendant, reveals the qualities you seek in a lifelong partner and how you meet others as equals.

Short-term

One-on-one dynamics happening now: a serious conversation with your partner, negotiating an agreement, meeting a business collaborator, or the person sitting directly across from you.

Long-term

Your capacity for committed union — marriage, long-term soul connections, business partnerships, and binding agreements. Sitting directly opposite the 1st House of Self, the 7th (its cusp is the Descendant) reveals the qualities you seek in a lifelong partner and how you share commitment.

The Eighth House: House of Intimacy & Transformation

“I Merge” · Scorpio · Pluto · Succedent

The 8th House is the chart's most intimate and transformative terrain. It governs deep bonding and physical intimacy, shared resources and joint finances, and the profound rebirths that come from merging your life with another's, including loss, inheritance, and everything held in trust between two people.

Short-term

The charged, private moments: physical intimacy, a vulnerable confession, a shared bill or joint decision, and the trust you extend when you let someone in close.

Long-term

Deep bonding and transformation — physical and emotional intimacy, shared finances and joint assets within a relationship, inheritance, and the profound personal rebirths that come from merging your life with another's.

The Ninth House: House of Expansion

“I Explore” · Sagittarius · Jupiter · Cadent

The 9th House is the reach for meaning. It rules long-distance travel, higher education, philosophy and faith, publishing, and the search for a bigger truth. Where the 3rd House gathers facts, the 9th weaves them into a worldview.

Short-term

Today's reach for something bigger: booking a trip, a class that stretches you, a big idea or debate, and the hunger to see beyond your usual horizon.

Long-term

The search for meaning across a lifetime — long-distance travel, higher education, philosophy, spirituality and faith, publishing, and the personal belief system you build to make sense of the world.

The Tenth House: House of Ambition

“I Achieve” · Capricorn · Saturn · Angular

Long-term

Your life's vocation and legacy — career path, public standing, achievements, and the mark you leave on the world. The 10th house cusp is the top of the chart (the Midheaven, or MC), the most visible point in your sky.

Short-term

Your social web in motion: group chats, friends you see this week, an online community, and the plans you're making for what comes next.

Long-term

The tribe you belong to and the future you're building toward — long-standing friendships, networks and alliances, humanitarian causes, and the hopes and wishes that guide your long-range goals.

The Twelfth House: House of the Unseen

“I Release” · Pisces · Neptune · Cadent

The 12th House is the hidden interior of the chart, everything that lives beneath the surface. It rules the subconscious, dreams, solitude, and retreat, along with endings, healing, and the quiet work of surrender that closes one cycle so a new one can begin.

Short-term

The hidden undercurrent of the day: your dreams last night, a need for solitude, time behind the scenes, and the feelings you keep just beneath the surface.

Long-term

The inner and spiritual life — the subconscious, healing and retreat, endings and letting go, hidden strengths and self-undoing, and the slow work of surrender that closes one cycle so the next 1st house can begin.
